Court records show that Cajetan Fernandes, 30, a citizen of Mumbai, India worked aboard P & O Cruises' Aurora as a cruise ship diningroom waiter during a Mediterranean cruise and that he lured a girl pasesnger into a restroom where he sexually assaulted her.
The girl, only 14 when the assault took place said that she had been waiting for another passenger outside the diningroom when the waiter stop to talk to her.
Southampton Crown Court heard Prosecutor James Kellam tell how Fernandes had persuaded the girl to follow him while she was waiting for a friend outside the restaurant one evening. She followed him to another area of the ship under false pretenses, and then was pulled into a restroom, where the assault took place after Fernandes locked the door.
The girl was so distressed over the event, she told a friend aboard the ship, and as a result decided to go to a youth counselor. Fernandes was confronted about the allegations while on the ship then was arrested when the vessel docked in Southampton.
Fernandes was sentenced to 15 months in a British prison for the sexual assault, small consolation to the family of this girl.
His lawyer says that Fernandes has received no visitors while in custody and had been too ashamed to let his family know what he had done.
He also claimed it was the first time he sexually assaulted a child on a cruise ship in the nine years he worked aboard cruise ships.
He was last known back in Goa, India.
